Learning From Your Past

I think painful memories exist to teach us that life won’t always follow our wills, most of time it gives us pain. It is a challenge that can make us grow from the pain. It’s safe to say that at some point we’ve drowned in our pain. It’s consumed us. It’s broken us. What happens next is entirely up to us. We chose to either learn from it and move forward, or do we wallow in our pain for years to come? You see, the only way to escape is to face it and learn from it. When the time comes, you will learn from your past and the shadow will become your new companion..

Reflecting on the Past

The thing about reflecting on your past is that you are able to identify the mistakes you made, and that’s when you say, “I really messed up, I wish I knew better.” Yes you are happy now because of the changes you made and how far you’ve come, while staring at the fact that you didn’t do better. It’s contradicting. I wish I had known better, I would of been a better man sooner, a better husband, a better father. However, I don’t live in regret anymore. It’s not easy to look at the past and realize the wrongs you committed, but I do not make any excuses for it, or my choices. Today, I live as someone who knows better, someone who made the necessary changes in their life, someone who will not make the same mistakes again.

Are You Ready to Learn?

The older I get, the more I’ve come to realize that it is remarkable just how much you can learn in a single year. Life lessons. I think the key is to be aware, be present and open. The more receptive you are to new ideas and perspectives, the more you can grow. Embrace the unexpected. The last three years have been nothing that I could have ever predicted, but it’s been incredible every step of the way. I am grateful for all of it. Start with this; Create a daily practice of gratitude. Whether it’s writing down in a blog, journal or napkin, it changes your life when you acknowledge your blessings. Thank those around you that bring happiness and thicken the plot of your story. Celebrate each ordinary moment. It’s the ordinary moments that create the glue in your life. They are often overlooked and taken for granted, but without them, lives tend to unravel and lose their shine. Invest in yourself. Not in a narcissistic or self-indulgent way but rather, in a ‘are you being the most genuine version of you’ way. There is incredible power looking in the mirror and loving who you see. Check in with yourself. Are things slowly but surely moving in the right direction? Most importantly, are you happy? Look, I’m getting old. I have white hairs, pudgy, I’m blind as a bat, I suck at remembering things, but this is who I am. I’m not perfect, no one is, but if anything has stuck with me these last three years, it is that unrealistic expectations can snuff out happiness. Green and growing every day. Trust the timing of your life, timing is everything. Be patient. Look towards the process, not the result. Trust your gut. Know that it is okay to not be okay. It’s also okay to say no. and on and on. Life lesson after life lesson. A year can bring  a lifetime of wisdom if you’re ready to learn.

The Best Lessons

Don’t be afraid to get back up – to try again, to love again, to live again, and to dream again. Don’t let a hard lesson harden your heart. Life’s best lessons are often learned at the worst times and from the worst mistakes. There will be times when it seems like everything that could possibly go wrong is going wrong. And you might feel like you will be stuck in this rut forever, but you won’t. When you feel like quitting, remember that sometimes things have to go very wrong before they can be right. Sometimes you have to go through the worst, to arrive at your best.
